Intra-generational work values amongst generation Y workforce
Downloads
While inter-generational differences (Baby Boomers vs. Gen X vs. Gen Y) are well-documented, this study addresses the knowledge gap regarding intra-generational differences within the Generation Y workforce. Using in-depth interviews with postgraduate students in Malaysia’s Klang Valley, the research explores how work values vary within the same generation. The findings identify three primary intra-generational work values: ‘work for money’, ‘work for self-actualization’, and ‘work for empowerment’. The study concludes that work values are multi-dimensional and evolving, influenced significantly by internal factors such as work experience and marital status. It highlights that there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to managing employees, even those from the same age cohort
